Updated Guide for Proper Healing & Long-Lasting Tattoos

Tattoos are a powerful form of self-expression and a lifelong piece of art on your skin. But what many people don’t realize is this: the quality of your tattoo after healing depends just as much on aftercare as it does on the artist’s skill.

This detailed aftercare guide is designed to help your tattoo heal safely, look sharp for years, and avoid common mistakes that can permanently damage your ink.

WHY TATTOO AFTERCARE MATTERS (READ THIS CAREFULLY)

Tattooing is not just art — it is a controlled skin injury, similar to a medical procedure. During tattooing, needles penetrate your skin thousands of times, which means your body needs time and proper care to heal.

Tattoo aftercare is important because:

  • It prevents infections and skin complications
  • It helps ink settle properly
  • It reduces scarring and patchy healing
  • It protects your investment (both money and effort)

Skipping aftercare or taking it lightly can result in faded tattoos, uneven lines, infections, or permanent damage.

THINGS YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START AFTERCARE

  • ✔ Tattoo aftercare cream (recommended by your artist)
  • ✔ Mild / antimicrobial tattoo soap
  • ✔ Clean paper towels or soft clean cloth
  • ✔ Clean water (lukewarm or cold only)
  • ✔ Patience & discipline

DAY-BY-DAY TATTOO AFTERCARE

DAY 1 – Right After the Tattoo

Your tattoo will be covered with a protective wrap.

What to do:

  • Keep the wrap on for 2–3 hours
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo
  • Gently remove the wrap
  • Wash the tattoo with cold water + mild tattoo soap
  • Use fingers only (no loofah, sponge, or cloth)
  • Rinse off blood, plasma, and excess ink

Drying:

  • Air-dry OR gently pat dry using paper towel
  • Do not rub

Moisturising:

  • Apply a very thin layer of tattoo aftercare cream
  • Massage gently until absorbed
  • Do NOT rewrap the tattoo

⚠️ Avoid petroleum-based products (Vaseline, heavy ointments)

DAYS 2–3 – Early Healing Phase

Your tattoo may look dull, cloudy, or slightly swollen. This is normal.

Care routine:

  • Wash tattoo twice a day
  • Apply aftercare cream 2 times daily
  • Use only a thin layer

Important note:
You may notice ink residue while washing. This is normal and part of the healing process.

DAYS 4–6 – Scabbing Phase (CRITICAL)

What’s normal:

  • Light scabs forming
  • Mild itching
  • Reduced redness

DO NOT:

  • Pick scabs
  • Scratch the tattoo
  • Rub with towel

You can let water run over the tattoo while showering. Pat dry gently. Apply cream once a day only if skin feels dry.

WEEK 1–2 – Peeling Phase

  • ✔ Let them fall on their own
  • ✔ Light itching is normal
  • ✔ Apply a tiny amount of cream to itchy areas

🚫 Never peel skin manually — this can remove ink.

WEEK 2–4 – Final Healing

  • Switch to light skin lotion or continue tattoo cream
  • Keep skin hydrated
  • Drink plenty of water

By the end of week 4, your tattoo should be fully healed on the surface.

WHAT NOT TO DO AFTER GETTING A TATTOO (VERY IMPORTANT)

❌ Food Restrictions (First 7–10 Days)

Avoid these foods to reduce inflammation and infection risk:

  • Non-vegetarian food (especially chicken, mutton, seafood)
  • Eggs
  • Excessively oily or spicy food
  • Alcohol (minimum 7 days, ideally 10–14 days)

✔ Eat light, clean food
✔ Fruits, vegetables, dal, rice, roti
✔ Drink plenty of water

Good nutrition = faster healing.

❌ Gym & Heavy Exercise

  • Avoid gym, yoga, cardio, weight training for 7–10 days
  • Stretching or excessive movement can crack healing skin
  • Sweat increases infection risk

If your job involves physical activity, take 2–3 days off if possible.

❌ Swimming Pool, Beach & Bathtub

  • Avoid for minimum 3–4 weeks
  • Pools contain chemicals & bacteria
  • Sea water and tubs can damage healing skin

🚫 No soaking the tattoo until fully healed.

❌ Sun Exposure

  • Avoid direct sunlight for 3–4 weeks
  • UV rays fade ink and damage healing skin
  • Keep tattoo covered when outdoors

❌ Tight Clothing

  • Wear loose, clean cotton clothing
  • Tight clothes can stick to tattoo and pull scabs

If clothing sticks:
✔ Wet it with water first
❌ Never pull forcefully

HOW TO SHOWER WITH A NEW TATTOO

  • Do not aim strong water pressure directly on tattoo
  • Prefer bucket bath (especially in India)
  • Use lukewarm or cold water
  • Avoid hot showers (opens pores & increases oozing)
  • Keep showers short
  • Use paper towel to dry tattoo, not body towel

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TATTOO LOOKS INFECTED

Signs of infection:

  • Excessive redness after day 3
  • Pus or foul smell
  • Severe pain or swelling
  • Fever

What to do:

  • Consult a doctor immediately
  • Inform your tattoo studio
  • Do NOT self-medicate

Infections may require antibiotics and later touch-ups.

WHAT TO EAT TO HELP YOUR TATTOO HEAL

  • ✔ Fresh fruits & vegetables
  • ✔ Vitamin C & protein-rich vegetarian food
  • ✔ Plenty of water
  • ✔ Light home-cooked meals

Your skin heals faster when your body is well-nourished.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is tattoo aftercare same for all tattoos?
No. Larger and heavily shaded tattoos need more care than minimal tattoos. However, cleaning and moisturizing rules remain the same.

What if my tattoo doesn’t peel?
Not all tattoos peel heavily. This is normal and depends on skin type.

How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Surface healing takes 2–3 weeks, complete internal healing can take up to 4 weeks.

Will I need a touch-up?
If ink loss occurs in tattoos done by us, touch-ups are provided after 6 weeks, if required.

FINAL WORD FROM INKINGKINGS

A tattoo is permanent — but damage is also permanent if aftercare is ignored. Follow these steps, listen to your artist, and treat your tattoo with respect.
